When it comes to planning a wedding, nothing will determine the style, formality and overall “vibe” of your day as much as your choice of venue. Any good wedding planner will tell you it’s the first thing you should find and book – but what many brides don’t think of at this stage is how impactful a venue choice will be the other big choice when it comes to wedding planning – your dress!
We spoke with the team at bridal accessory label Elle + Adhira to get tips on the kinds of gowns and accessories that pair beautifully with some of Australia’s chicest wedding venues.
The Farmhouse Wedding
Australia is lucky enough to boast a number of beautifully rustic – yet still stylish – farmhouse or rural venues. Whether it’s BoxGrove in NSW’s Blue Mountains, or The Farm in the Yarra Valley (below), it’s easy to see why nature-loving couples choose to get out of the city and celebrate somewhere more down-to-earth.
When it comes to choosing the sartorial components of a farmhouse wedding, think romance and vintage. To elevate a farmhouse wedding to something that’s as beautiful and special as your wedding deserves to be, you’ll be searching for a gown adorned with feminine details such as lace, and long trains. Don’t make the mistake of choosing something too simple and “straight” – you’ll need embellished, feminine accents to balance the “back to nature” vibe of your farm surrounds.
Mermaid and fit-and-flare silhouettes will work beautifully, as will long, trailing lace veils. For inspiration, think blogger Brooke Testoni’s Inbal Dror gown at her Hunter Valley farmhouse wedding (below).
While you glide through fields in feminine lace, your bridesmaids can stay slightly more casual, so that you shine. You might even consider inviting them to wear botanic-style crowns to connect you with the naturalistic surrounds, such as the Isobel Wax Flower Crown from Elle + Adhira:
The urban warehouse wedding
Converted and restored warehouses are becoming an increasingly popular wedding venue choice for couples. Florists and stylists love them because they often operate as a blank canvas that you can transform with your own unique vision. Some of our favourites include Higher Ground in Melbourne (below) and The Flour Factory in Perth.
For an urban warehouse wedding, opt for something high-fashion and glamorous. Sheath-like silhouettes, silky gowns and jewelled embellishments will work beautifully. The figure-hugging silhouette of this Cleo Borrello gown, paired with the beaded Elle + Adhira Nahla veil, makes for great inspo:
As does this exquisite backstage shot from New York Bridal Fashion Week, by The LANE:
A city industrial-style wedding is your chance to max out on opulence – so don’t hold back.
The historical landmark
If you’ve chosen to have your wedding in a historical building – such as The Voeux in the Yarra Valley (below), for instance – you clearly appreciate the splendour and mystique that comes with a location that has seen many, many stories take place.
So you’ll be pleased to hear that if you’ve chosen a grand, old-worldy location for your wedding day, you have full permission to go in the exact same direction with your choice of gown. This is the setting that a regal, princess-style gown was made for. Choose A-line or ball gown silhouettes, and be open to traditionally feminine adornments like bows, tulle or corsetry.
This Naeem Khan gown would be beautiful in a historic venue:
As would this stunning Marchesa gown:
Most importantly: Have fun
If you’re planning a wedding, you’re lucky enough to have found a love that is special enough to share and celebrate – so, you’ve already nailed it. Enjoy the creative process and have fun imagining the way the various pieces of the puzzle might fit together – all the while remembering that the most important part of your day is the love and connection you’ll feel with your (new) spouse throughout all of the excitement.
